It comprises seven main islands (Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri and Gorgona) and several small islets and rocky reefs.

An ancient legend has it that the islands came into being when the goddess Venus emerged from the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, in her haste to reach the shore, lost her precious pearl necklace: seven of them resurfaced and became the beautiful islands that now form the Archipelago.

These islands differ in the geological nature of the land, the landscapes and the wonders of biodiversity preserved there, but they all have in common a crystal-clear sea and vivid vegetation. Moreover, these gems still preserve the quiet island life, with its local traditions and customs.

Since 1996, they have formed the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the largest marine park in Europe established to protect, enhance and preserve the beauty of the area and its extraordinary variety of natural environments.

Let’s discover together the seven main islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

ELBA

Italy’s third largest island, Elba is the largest in the Tuscan Archipelago. It has infinite reasons for seduction: first of all, the variety of its seascapes, with high, sheer coastlines, long beaches of the finest sand or small inlets of white gravel framed by scenes of Mediterranean scrub; and then the surprising vegetation, flourishing and fragrant. It should also not be forgotten that the island, which has always been known for its iron ore deposits, is characterised by an extraordinary wealth of rocks and minerals. Elba is also rich in history and evidence of its past, such as the medieval Volterraio Castle and the Palazzina dei Mulini, Napoleon’s residence in his first exile, which still preserves relics of the time. Finally, it is the ideal place for diving, trekking and cycling enthusiasts, with an incredible network of dedicated routes. There is never a dull moment, there is always something to do and see.

GIGLIO

Second largest in the Tuscan Archipelago, the wild island of Giglio is truly a pearl waiting to be discovered. Located opposite Monte Argentario, it is first and foremost a natural environment of great value. It hosts splendid beaches such as the larger Campese beach, known for the reddish colour of its sand and the enchanting panorama at sunset, and other smaller ones such as the Arenella, Cannelle and Caldane beaches. The island boasts unparalleled water transparency that makes it a true paradise for snorkelling enthusiasts. Moreover, its territory invites you to venture along fascinating paths immersed in unspoilt nature and from which you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Archipelago. In addition to the beautiful landscapes, the landing place of Giglio Porto and the charming medieval village of Giglio Castello, with its characteristic alleys and the remains of the Pisan fortress, are worth a visit.

CAPRAIA

With an area of 19.3 km², Capraia is the third largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago. It owes its name to the wild goats, now extinct, that once made up most of its fauna. Volcanic in origin and predominantly mountainous, it is known for the erosion phenomena on its steep coastline. The waters around Capri are particularly rich: snorkelling, diving and scuba diving enthusiasts will find magnificent seabeds, where remarkable underwater archaeological finds have also settled. There are numerous beautiful paths that lead to the discovery of hidden coves and unspoilt corners. Capraia’s historical and artistic heritage is very rich: in addition to the four churches on the island (Santo Stefano, Santa Maria Assunta, San Nicola and Sant’Antonio), there is the Fort of San Giorgio, built by the Genoese in the 16th century.

MONTECRISTO

Extending over about 10 km², it is the most inaccessible, the most isolated and the richest in legends. One such legend has it that Saint Mamilianus, persecuted by King Genseric, took refuge on a small island called Mount Jupiter, which was given the name Mons Christi after the passage to Christianity. Legend also tells of a treasure, which inspired Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel ‘The Count of Montecristo’. As it has been an Integral Nature Reserve since 1971 and a Biogenetic Nature Reserve since 1988, reaching it is by no means easy: very few daily permits are granted during the year and visits are made along pre-established routes only in the presence of an authorised guide. The symbol of this place is the Montecristo goat, the only one in our country that lives in the wild, brought here by ancient navigators and of which there are about 250.

PIANOSA

The fifth largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, Pianosa alternates rocky stretches with splendid bays, the best known of which is the striking Cala Giovanna. It was the site first of a penal colony and then of a super-prison, and this has ensured that its natural beauty has remained intact. But Pianosa is not only nature, in fact, it has numerous testimonies of a rich and intriguing past such as the early Christian catacombs and the remains of Agrippa’s Roman villa. We recommend a walk among the elegant neo-Gothic buildings, now abandoned and corroded by wind and salt, of the old village of Pianosa, uninhabited since 1968, when the penal colony was converted into a maximum-security penitentiary and the civilians were removed. Although it is no longer a penitentiary, today it is inhabited by a few people in charge of surveillance and control of the island.

GIANNUTRI

The romantic Giannutri, which emerges from the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea with its rocky cliffs sculpted by the wind, is the southernmost of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. The only landing points are Cala dello Spalmatoio and Cala Maestra, which have small pebble beaches. Always considered sacred to Artemis-Diana for its crescent shape, Giannutri is an uncontaminated oasis of rare beauty. The seabed, rich in biodiversity and secrets such as ancient wrecks, makes it a paradise for snorkelling and diving lovers. Passionate hikers, on the other hand, can enjoy magnificent natural scenery by following the various paths that lead into the Mediterranean scrub. The main attraction of the island is Villa Domizia, a splendid Roman villa dating back to the 2nd century AD. which was built by the powerful Domizi Enobarbi family. The archaeological site can only be visited accompanied by an authorized guide.

GORGONA

The smallest and northernmost of the Tuscan islands, Gorgona, is the last active prison island in Italy. Visits are permitted exclusively with a qualified environmental hiking guide and with some limitations due to the prison regime on the one hand and the protection of biodiversity on the other. Like the other pearls of the Tuscan Archipelago, Gorgona is also rich in natural and landscape wonders. The coast is characterized by numerous inlets and bays, the most evocative of which are: Cala Scirocco, with the Grotta del Bove marino, once a refuge for monk seals; Cala Maestra and Cala Martina. On the island you can also find: the interesting Church of San Gorgonio, rebuilt in 1723 to replace the ancient church destroyed in the 15th century; and two fortifications, the Old Tower built by the Pisans and the New Tower dating back to the Medici era.

Situated between the Tuscan coast and Corsica, the Archipelago is a true natural paradise that everyone, at least once in their life, should be able to visit.
