Along the coast of Elba stand numerous lighthouses<\/strong> that, since ancient times, have always played a fundamental role in the management of maritime traffic, making the island an important reference point for navigation in the Mediterranean Sea. Perfectly integrated into the coastal landscape, these lighthouses today represent a cultural heritage to be safeguarded<\/strong> as well as real tourist attractions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Forte Stella lighthouse in Portoferraio<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Forte Stella lighthouse in Portoferraio is one of the symbols of the Island of Elba. It stands outside the northern bastion of Forte Stella, a fortification erected in the 16th century at the behest of the Medici family to defend the place from pirate attacks. The lighthouse was commissioned by Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, between 1788 and 1789, but its current appearance is due to renovations in 1915. Its 25-metre high tower dominates the ancient Medici city, the port and the entire gulf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Punta Polveraia lighthouse in Marciana<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the municipality of Marciana, specifically at the top of the village of Patresi, stands the lighthouse of Punta Polveraia, 52 metres above sea level. It was built by the Regia Marina at the beginning of the 20th century to ensure the illumination of the island’s western coastline and the Corsica Channel. It is a very suggestive place from which one can enjoy breathtaking sunsets and splendid views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lighthouse of Capo Focardo in Capoliveri<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As its name suggests, it is located inside the 17th-century Fort Focardo, of Spanish origin. Although it stands in the municipal territory of Capoliveri, the lighthouse was erected in 1848 to illuminate the coastal stretch of Porto Azzurro. Its tower rises 32 metres above sea level. Surrounding the structure is like being in a natural oasis. A small curiosity: it was here that Raffaello Brignetti, one of Italy’s greatest writers, spent his youth following his father (who was the lighthouse keeper).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Monte Poro lighthouse at Campo nell’Elba<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the southern coast of the island, in the municipality of Campo nell’Elba, is the Monte Poro lighthouse. It was inaugurated in the second half of the 20th century with the purpose of illuminating the south-west coast closing the bay of Marina di Campo for sailors. Its powerful light system makes it visible from great distances. The lighthouse is reached via a rough path from Marina di Campo to the top of the mountain. During the Second World War, a military post was located here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also along the southern coast is the Marina di Campo lighthouse, one of the first modern lighthouses erected on the island. It was activated in 1901 to signal the Marina di Campo stretch of coastline to sailors. It is located on top of a rectangular building, adjacent to the tower of Marina di Campo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Africa Rock Lighthouse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And last but not least, the Scoglio d’Africa lighthouse, located on the islet of the same name (also known as Scoglio d’Affrica, Africhella or Formica di Montecristo), in the municipality of Portoferraio, west of the Island of Montecristo. It was activated in 1867 by the Regia Marina to illuminate the small islet for sailors. The structure features a circular tower in white stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
