Sandwiched between the sea and the Apuan Alps, it manages to satisfy every type of traveller with its extraordinary natural, architectural and cultural heritage.

What to see in Versilia? We have selected for you 10 things not to be missed!

FORTE LORENESE IN FORTE DEI MARMI

Forte Lorenese, also known as Fortino, is the symbol of Forte dei Marmi and even appears represented on the municipal coat of arms. It is a military construction built in the second half of the 18th century by Pietro Leopoldo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany to strengthen the defensive system of the coastal towers. It stands in the center of the town and appears as a quadrangular-plan complex, made up of two buildings placed next to each other. Over time it has had various uses and currently houses the Museum of Satire and Caricature, which has a rich collection of contemporary and past satirical drawings.

ARGENTINA VILLA IN VIAREGGIO

The center of Viareggio is rich in architectural beauties in Art Nouveau style, among which Villa Argentina stands out, which, for its architecture and its decorative artefacts, can be considered the most significant expression of the modernist language of the entire Versilia. Located a few steps from the famous Passeggiata Margherita, it dates back to the 1920s. On the outside, the ceramics of the artist Galileo Chini stand out while the interiors offer multiple and unexpected surprises such as the sumptuous Sala degli Stucchi, which best expresses the elegant refinement of the spaces. On the main wall of the room you can admire the pictorial cycle called “Persian Wedding”, created by the Sardinian painter Giuseppe Biasi.

CARNIVAL MUSEUM IN VIAREGGIO

In Viareggio, the Carnival Museum is also worth a visit, where it is possible to discover all the secrets and tricks of papier-mâché. It is housed inside the Cittadella del Carnivale, the largest and most important Italian thematic center dedicated to masks. The museum traces the glorious history of the Viareggio carnival through original documents, sketches, posters and models. There is also an educational stand where the various phases of creating a papier-mâché work are illustrated. Hangar number 16 instead houses the Espace Gilbert, where significant elements of the allegorical constructions that paraded at the carnival are presented, divided by thematic areas.

MEDICI VILLA OF SERAVEZZA

On the slopes of the Apuan Alps is the Medici Villa of Seravezza, a magnificent architectural complex included in the List of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the UNESCO World Heritage together with the other Medici villas. The main building of the complex is the palace, built in the second half of the 16th century at the behest of Cosimo I de’ Medici, who used it as a temporary residence during his frequent visits to the mines and marble quarries. The building is home to the Sirio Giannini Library, the Municipal Historical Archive and the Museum of Work and Popular Traditions of Historic Versilia while the stables house the municipal theater and cinema.

CORCHIA’S ANTRO

The Antro del Corchia is one of the largest underground environments in Europe and among the largest in the world. It is located in Levigliani, a hamlet of the municipality of Stazzema, and boasts 70 kilometers of tunnels, wells and halls dug by water over millions of years. The cave, once known as Buca del Vento due to the strong wind that can be felt at the entrance, was discovered by chance in 1841 by the speleologist and geologist Giuseppe Simi from Leviglia. The spectacular complex can be visited via a suggestive underground route, which winds for 2 kilometres. The visit is guided and lasts about two hours. The difficulty level of the route corresponds to that of a very light trek.

CATHEDRAL OF SAN MARTINO IN PIETRASANTA

The beating heart of Pietrasanta is the splendid Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral of San Martino with its characteristic red brick bell tower, which remains unfinished. The building, entirely covered in white marble, was built starting from the 14th century on a pre-existing church dedicated to San Martino. It has a façade divided into three parts by pillars, with a central rose window and three lunettes with bas-reliefs above the doors. Inside there are notable works of sculpture and painting, among which the following stand out: the marvelous marble pulpit dating back to the 16th century; the painting of the Madonna del Sole, dated 1424; and the fourteenth-century wooden crucifix.

COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA IN CAMAIORE

In Camaiore, the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta is undoubtedly worth a visit, located in the historic center. It was founded in the second half of the 13th century and although it has undergone many changes over time it has maintained its 13th century structure, with the austere asymmetric façade. The interior, which consists of three naves divided by arches supported by Romanesque pillars, houses some valuable works of art. Among these we highlight: a particularly beautiful fourteenth-century wooden crucifix; the canvas with the Annunciation by Stefano Tofanelli, dating back to 1805; and four canvases by Benedetto Brandimarte, a Renaissance painter from Lucca.

CANDALLA WATERFALLS

Not far from the center of Camaiore are the Candalla waterfalls, a heavenly place where you can bathe in icy water surrounded by a dense forest, almost like a jungle. In addition to waterfalls, the valley offers climbing walls and interesting archaeological and historical sites. The path that runs alongside the waterfalls is a section of the ring 7 Candalla – Casoli – Metato – Candalla. Along the route you come across numerous ruins and ruins of factories, mills, oil mills, pasta factories and powder factories. Among the most interesting buildings are the Bertagna pasta factory and the Taccone mill.

MASSACIUCCOLI LAKE

Another of the things to see in Versilia is Lake Massaciuccoli, on the side of the municipality of Massarosa. Already known in Roman times as the Fosse Papiriane lake, it is part of the Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Regional Park and of a Lipu oasis, which has been involved in scientific research and environmental monitoring projects for over 30 years. Here it is possible to spend a day immersed in wild nature and practice a large number of activities such as birdwatching, kayaking, canoeing, sailing or simply walking above the lake, on the suggestive wooden walkways. Furthermore, you can also take part in boat excursions with an environmental guide organized by Lipu.

PUCCINI VILLA MUSEUM IN TORRE DEL LAGO

On the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, and precisely in Torre del Lago, a delightful hamlet in the municipality of Viareggio, there is the villa of Giacomo Puccini, where the famous composer born in Lucca lived for over twenty years. It is a small two-storey house with the typical appearance of bourgeois villas of the late 19th century. The building, transformed into a museum in 1925 by Puccini’s son, retains its original appearance intact. Inside you can admire testimonies and relics of all kinds such as the Foster piano and the swivel chair on which he composed various works, some portraits of the master in various periods of his life, the funeral mask, a precious Japanese screen and other objects of daily life.

Versilia is a magnificent area of Tuscany best known for being a seaside destination, but in addition to wonderful beaches, there is much to visit.
