The first stop is Lake Isola Santa<\/strong>, one of the most pristine sites in the entire Garfagnana. It is a small artificial lake for the production of hydroelectric energy, powered by the waters of the Turrite Secca stream. On its banks stands an enchanting village, which has remained immune to the laws of time, made up of a few stone houses with slate roofs and a very characteristic church. The lake is navigable by canoe, kayak or other boats. Furthermore, sport fishing for prized and wild brown trout is practiced here. Various hiking trails also depart from Isola Santa which reach Monte Sumbra or the Panie Group. The itinerary then continues towards Castelnuovo di Garfagnana<\/strong>, a delightful village that retains all the characteristics of the past. Many narrow streets full of shops and historical monuments branch off from the central Piazza Umberto I, among which the following stand out: the Cathedral of San Pietro, rebuilt in its current form at the beginning of the 16th century; and the imposing Rocca Ariostesca, built in the 12th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few kilometers from Castelnuovo is Lake Pontecosi<\/strong>, a hydroelectric basin built along the Serchio river. It constitutes one of the most important wintering points for migratory birds in Garfagnana. Here, in fact, there is a numerous and varied avifauna, which makes the place particularly interesting for birdwatching enthusiasts. On the right bank of the lake there are picnic areas and fishing spots while on the left there is a large equipped green area. The town of Pontecosi, which is located right on the lake shore, is also worth a visit. The next stop is Lake Vagli<\/strong>, the largest artificial basin in Tuscany, in whose depths are the ruins of the submerged town of Fabbriche di Careggine, which was swallowed up by the waters of the lake in 1953, when a raising of the Vagli dam. The town reappears only when the basin is emptied for maintenance work. The hub of tourist activities is the town of Bivio, where the picnic areas, the departure of the route to the Suspension Bridge and the shuttle to the Flight of the Angel are located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you go up to Vagli di Sopra, you quickly reach Campocatino<\/strong>, an enchanted place at the foot of the Apuan Alps. The name already suggests its origin: it is a large meadow originating from a glacial basin. Located at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level, Campocatino is an ancient shepherds’ mountain pasture where the houses used in the past during periods of Alpine transhumance, called “caselli”, are still present. The old houses have been restored but still retain their charm. Various CAI hiking trails start from here. Not to be missed is the Hermitage of San Viviano in the surrounding area, set in the vertical wall of the mountain. From Campocatino we continue towards Gorfigliano to arrive at Lake Gramolazzo<\/strong>, the last stop on the itinerary. The majestic Monte Pisanino, the highest in the Apuan chain, is reflected in its green waters. The lake is bordered by a beautiful promenade and picnic areas. You can practice various water sports and it is also possible to swim during the summer months near some sandy beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Garfagnana, the green island of Tuscany, extends between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
