Viareggio is located in upper Tuscany, in a strategic position for holidaymakers. It is perfect because it allows you to visit the whole region by taking short daily trips. In Viareggio you can find sandy beaches with bathing establishments or wilder beaches where pinewoods and dunes come very close to the sea. A little further north, a half-hour ferry ride or an hour’s drive will take you to the Cinque Terre with its rocky coastline and crystal-clear waters. Continuing southwards, connected to Viareggio, is the hamlet of Torre del Lago Puccini, with the historic residence of Maestro Giacomo Puccini and the Teatro Lirico. which stands right on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, where the International Puccini Festival is held every summer. Several sailing and rowing schools can be found on the lake.
From the pier in Viareggio, in summer, one can take trips in specially equipped boats to admire dolphins or practice typical Viareggio fishing with the possibility of lunching directly on board with one’s catch.Behind Viareggio rise the Apuan Alps, which form a stupendous and almost unique contrast between the sharp peaks, almost 2000 metres high, and the blue sea at their feet. The Apuan Alps are rich in marble and conceal an area characterised by customs and traditions that are completely different from those on the coast, even though they are so close to them.
Marble quarries, alpine refuges, lardo di colonnata, paths and vie ferrate make this area easily accessible from Viareggio a world waiting to be discovered.
Between the sea and the high mountains, instead, lie the gentle hills that are home to numerous villages, hamlets and hamlets where you can still breathe the air of the past, where in the summer evenings you can take refuge to find some coolness and peace or go in search of traditional festivals and fairs. Viareggio borders Lucca, a fortified town, and Pisa, where the famous Leaning Tower stands, both easily reached by car in 20 minutes. Florence, the capital of Tuscany, and the world-famous Chianti area are only a 1-hour drive away, an excursion not to be missed by gourmets.
