Are you always looking for romantic places to spend pleasant moments with your partner? Then Tuscany is just the place for you. There are plenty of places that make the heart beat faster, perfect for exchanging a kiss or declaring eternal love.
What are the most romantic places in Tuscany? We have selected six that every couple, at least once in their lives, should visit.
Ponte Santa Trinita in Florence
Florence is, par excellence, one of the most romantic cities in Italy, if not the world. But if you really want to hit the mark and leave your sweetheart speechless, you must take her to admire the sunset from Ponte Santa Trinita. Few other places can offer such an emotional experience. The bridge, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, takes its name from the nearby Santa Trinita Basilica. The elegance of its arches has also inspired films. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it has a long and troubled history behind it. We recommend you stop under the statue with the allegory of Winter: from there you can enjoy an enchanting view of the Ponte Vecchio.
The Walk on the Walls of Lucca
The Walls of Lucca are perfect for a romantic walk hand in hand, especially when the sun sets and the first lights come on. Many engaged couples meet along this beautiful walkway that stretches for more than four kilometres. In addition, the walls offer a privileged vantage point over the old town. From the 12-metre height over which the walkway runs, splendid views of the city’s main monuments can be admired. They were built between 1513 and 1650 with the purpose of defending the city, although the current layout dates back to the 19th century, when the structure was converted into a pedestrian promenade by Maria Luisa of Bourbon.
The Tree of Love in Lucignano
Another essential stop for lovers in Tuscany is Lucignano, a small village in the province of Arezzo perched on top of a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana. Immersed in the Tuscan countryside, it represents one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval town planning. In the Lucignano Municipal Museum, housed on the ground floor of the Palazzo Comunale, is the Tree of Love, a grandiose tree-shaped reliquary with branches decorated with coral, crystals and miniatures on parchment made by the famous Sienese goldsmith Gabriello d’Antonio. According to legend, it has the power to make couples’ promises of love eternal, guaranteeing good fortune and happiness.
The Via dell’Amore in Pienza
When talking about the most romantic places in Tuscany, one cannot fail to mention Pienza, a magnificent town nestled in the hills of the Val d’Orcia. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, it represents one of the rare Renaissance ‘ideal city’ projects put into practice. Here you will find one of the most romantic streets in Italy. We are talking about the picturesque Via dell’Amore, one of the four traverses that connect Via del Casello with Corso Rossellino. The others are Via del Bacio, Via della Fortuna and Via del Buia. Pienza’s romantic atmosphere also seduced a great director like Franco Zeffirelli, who set some scenes of the film ‘Romeo and Juliet’ there in 1968.
The enchanted village of Isola Santa
Another romantic place to visit is the enchanted village of Isola Santa, which seems to have come straight out of a storybook. A hamlet of the municipality of Careggine, in the province of Lucca, it stands amidst the naturalistic and scenic wonders of the Apuan Alps. Here it seems that time has stood still: it preserves all the charm of its medieval origins. It consists of just a few stone houses and a very characteristic little church overlooking an artificial lake fed by the waters of the Turrite Secca stream. For nature lovers, numerous hiking trails lead from Isola Santa to discover the Garfagnana and its most authentic corners.
The Terrazza Mascagni in Livorno
Finally, you cannot miss the elegant Terrazza Mascagni in Livorno and the wonderful promenade along the seafront. Romantic and scenic, it is dedicated to Pietro Mascagni, the composer from Livorno famous mainly for his first opera, Cavalleria Rusticana. It is a large square overlooking the sea, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and one of the most beautiful sunsets in the entire region. Its uniqueness lies in its decoration: it is characterised by a magnificent, visually striking chequered floor made up of over thirty thousand black and white tiles.
