The most beautiful beaches on the Island of Elba

The Island of Elba is the ideal destination for those who want to enjoy an unforgettable holiday by the sea. With its 147 km of coastline and more than 150 bays, this enchanting island is a paradise for sun worshippers and sunbathers: sandy or pebble beaches, small or large, suitable for sports enthusiasts or ideal for families with children, wild or equipped, you will be spoilt for choice. Such a concentration of beaches gives you an idea of why so many tourists choose it for their holidays.

But which are the most beautiful beaches on the Island of Elba? Let us discover them together.

Are you looking for sandy beaches? Then you absolutely cannot miss the wonderful Biodola beach in the municipality of Portoferraio, a long stretch of fine, golden sand. It is located in a splendid natural amphitheatre made up of the Serrone delle Cime, Capannone and Colle Pecorara hills covered by lush woods and Mediterranean scrub. Ultra-equipped, it has a gently sloping seabed, making it perfect for families with children. A few kilometres away, in the municipality of Marciana, is Procchio beach, one of the largest on the island. Enclosed between Punta Agnone and the small beach of La Guardiola, this wide beach of golden sand is ideal for those who want all the amenities. It enjoys continuous ventilation and is particularly suitable for children’s bathing thanks to the seabed that slopes gently down to the sea. In addition, beautiful sunsets with unforgettable colours can be admired from here.

On the south-western side, in the territory of Campo nell’Elba, the beaches of Fetovaia and Cavoli meet in succession. Fetovaia beach, made of granite, coarse-grained sand, is one of the most striking on the island. About 200 metres long, it is protected by the wild promontory of Punta di Fetovaia, which shelters it from strong winds. It is well served and suitable for families with children because of its shallow waters, where the little ones can play in peace. Also noteworthy is Cavoli beach, one of the most famous on the island for the transparency of the sea, the grainy sand, and the mild climate that allows bathing even in the low season. Although it is recommended for families with children, it is the beach of Elba’s movida, much frequented by young people. To the east of Cavoli is the beautiful Grotta Azzurra, which can only be reached by sea, renting a small boat or pedalo.

Another sandy beach not to be missed is Laconella beach in Capoliveri, which opens up on the right side of the Gulf of Lacona. About 200 metres long, it is an expanse of fine, light-coloured sand. Set in a quiet and natural environment, the beach is recommended for scuba diving enthusiasts because the gently sloping sandy seabed opens up to rocky bottoms inhabited by many varieties of fish and molluscs. Among the most beautiful black sand beaches on the island is Cala Seregola in the municipality of Rio Marina, also known as Capo Pero. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is located near a former mine, now disused, which still characterises its shape today. The beach has a magnificent sandy seabed rich in minerals that glisten in the sun. Here, even in August, you will always find tranquillity. On clear days, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the island of Palmaiola, the islet of Cerboli and the island of Giglio.

Along the northern coast of Elba, starting from Portoferraio and continuing westwards, there are several particularly fascinating white pebble beaches. One of these is certainly the Ghiaie beach a stone’s throw from the historic centre of Portoferraio, a thin stretch of white pebbles polished by the sea stained, according to legend, by the sweat drops of the Argonauts. Famous for the incomparable beauty of its seabed, it is a must for those who love diving. White pebble seabed also for the nearby beach of Capo Bianco, also in the municipality of Portoferraio. Surrounded by imposing white cliffs, this heavenly beach has a crystal-clear sea, especially on Sirocco days. With its shallows and rocks rising to the surface, it is the ideal destination for snorkelling enthusiasts. Continuing further to the west, you come to Sansone beach, a narrow tongue of sand and white eurite gravel about 300 metres long. To reach it you have to walk a 10-minute path, but it is really worth it. Usually little frequented, it is suitable for those who do not like crowds and appreciate wild nature.

For those in search of peace and silence, we also recommend La Cala in Marciana Marina, a small round pebble beach set in one of the island’s greenest stretches of coastline. Unspoilt and wild, it can be reached via a long path that begins where the panoramic view west of the port of Marciana Marina ends. And the fact that it is not easy to find and reach is a guarantee of tranquillity even in high season. A few kilometres away is the small beach of Sant’Andrea, with its granite sand lapped by a turquoise sea. The beach is characterised by the presence of long cliffs that make the atmosphere authentic and wild. Lastly, if you are incurable romantics, you cannot miss the Innamorata beach in Capoliveri, set in a beautiful landscape characterised by the nearby Gemini islands. The beach owes its name to an old legend concerning two young lovers, according to which, in 1534, a young woman, in despair at the killing of her beloved by Barbarossa’s pirates, took her own life by throwing herself into the sea. Every year on 14 July, the two lovers are commemorated with a torchlight procession on the beach.

Now all you have to do is make a reservation and set off to discover the most beautiful beaches on the Island of Elba.
