Two beaches on the Island of Elba among the most beautiful in Europe according to European Best Destinations

In 2022, the beaches on the Island of Elba will again be among the most beautiful in Europe. This is said by the European Best Destinations, a Brussels-based organisation created to promote tourism and culture in Europe. Every year, the association draws up a ranking of the most beautiful beaches on the Old Continent based on real surveys conducted among European travellers. The Island of Elba appears in the first twenty positions with no less than two beaches. Let us see which ones they are.

The first, Cavoli beach, occupies 14th place in the European ranking of the tourism promotion board. It is located in a small inlet on the south-west coast of the island, between the main town Marina di Campo and the hamlet of Seccheto. It is divided into a private area reserved for nearby hotels and a public area. About 350 metres long and up to 25 metres wide, it owes its success to the transparency of the sea and the golden, grainy sand. Moreover, the proximity of Monte Capanne, which protects the bay from the winds, favours a mild climate that allows bathing even in the low season. The name Cavoli derives from ‘cavili’, the square blocks of granite that were once quarried in the area. Although it is recommended for families with children, it is one of the busiest places in Elba’s nightlife. Near the beach is the beautiful Grotta Azzurra, also called Grotta di Mare, which can only be reached by sea.

The second, La Sorgente, occupies 16th place in the ranking and is located in Portoferraio, right in the centre of the northern coast of Elba. This little corner of paradise, also known as Acquavivetta, owes its name to a freshwater spring located in a nearby ditch. The beach, which has nothing to envy the most famous and popular tropical destinations, is characterised by a very clear sea and small, smooth, white pebbles. It is not ideal for families with small children, but is perfect for adults, especially those who enjoy snorkelling. A scenic path leads from here to the nearby beach of Sansone.
